A Letter to My 16-Year-Old Self

Dear my 16-year-old self,

Please be careful who you hang around, those girls you have been hanging out with, they are doing you no good. They aren't as good as they think, but you are better then that. The 'good looks' that they think are the number one priority, really aren't worth your happiness. Who am I kidding those girls are horrendous. You don't deserve to be treated the way they treat people. Your self esteem is more important then your friendship with those girls. Please, please, please don't let them treat you like that. It's not fair. They are not worth crying over every night and missing school. They aren't your friends. Please be careful.

Fall in love. But fall in love properly. Don't fall in love with a boy that thinks sex and good looks are everything, don't mould who you are. The boys who look at you for being intelligent and kind are the ones you should fall in love with. The boy versions of your so called 'friends' are not the boys to fall in love with. You tend to fall in love quickly and easily. Choose the boy who listens to you and loves you for you. Don't let him push you around and make you feel bad, you are independent and you do not need that in your life. Never cry over a boy night after night. Don't spend hours in the shower crying because boys will seduce with promises that never occur. Please be careful.

Even though you are 16, don't ever let go of the child that is still living in you. You can still be a child without being 'immature'. Don't ever let go of your adventurous spirit. Listen to your heart, society. Wear what you want to wear, not what others expect you to wear, tuck your hair behind your ears, dance in the rain, but most of all be you. Love your mother, because she loves you and only wants the best for you. Don't fight with her, be nice to her, you will need her more then ever one day. Make her proud. Don't lie to her and do things to hurt her. Small gestures make her happy.

Focus on school, it'll make your mother happy, you will need it in life more then ever - you are so smart and have so much potential despite what society has to say. Enjoy the process of learning. Please be careful.

Your family has been through so much. Don't let it get to your head. Your parents love you no matter what. One day you will have your own family and you will never let anything like this happen to them. Your child hood was ruined because of family problems, you have been strong enough to get through those years, now you can get through these years.

So far, your school years have been terrible because of stupid, low-life girls who only give a damn about themselves and which boy they will get on this weekend. They haven't cared about your feelings. So don't give a damn about them. You're allowed to love who you want to love, don't let them tell you different. They won't be successful and they will regret treating you the way they have because karma will happen. Please be careful.

Next year will be a new year, but now is not to late to make changes to be able to be happy. Happiness should be your number one priority. Please be careful.
